Lake Reports
Lake Fork: By Justin Rackley

May has come to a close and it is now time for another
exciting time on lake fork, THE DEEP BITE. The famous deep
bite on lake fork is an exciting way to catch many quality
fish in a short period of time. I have been seeing more fish
start to move out deep but there are still plenty of good
fish to be caught in the shallows. With the bluegill
spawning, those big girls will come in and feed on the pesky
bluegill that ate their eggs last month. My best colors are
still the sour grape and blue bruiser. These colors in a
wacky rig LFT ring fry and a LFT 8" fork worm on a light
weight have caught many fish. Timing is a key part of this
time of year. Knowing what time of day the fish are moving
to different areas will put many more fish in the boat. Look
for fish deep on humps and roadbeds and creek channel bends.
A LFT flutter spoon has been killer, but have a 5.5" live
magic shad in blue back herring ready to throw when the fish
break the surface. You have to be quick to catch them. A
Carolina rigged chartreuse pepper ring fry has produced some
fish as well. Top water is still god early and late as well.
A rico and a spook can get some real monsters early.
Good luck and catch a mondo!

The water clarity was good. The wind was light so the lake
was not too rough. We started the trip off with some
bowfishing that netted us 10 tilapia in about 1 1/2 hours.
We then grabbed the cast net, caught some shad and headed
for deeper water. We were drifting in about 30 feet of
water. We ended up with a red fish that was too small and a
very nice blue cat.

Finally, here about 2 weeks ago, the wind decided to quit
blowing so durn hard making our trout bite really turn on
because of the green water and higher tides. Limits have
been almost easy for me while wade fishing the outside
beaches with sand & grass. Boat fishing for trout has been
good too, but I can't seem to "get away" from wading right
now. By far the best bait going is live croaker. The trout
have been hammering them to say the least! I have had some
really nice mornings too throwing topwaters for trout where
I find a lot of nervous bait while bunched up together real
tight like.
Since the wind quit blowing and we finally got our bull tide
in here, I have not been red fishing at all for the last
week or so. Prior to the winds dying, my clients were having
some exceptional days catching limits of reds in the back
lakes though. I'm sure the reds are still there, but trout
fishing has been a welcome change of pace for me and I'm
sticking to the trout for now.
Until next time,
